Voynich's trips to America 1914-1924 All publications on the Voynich MS and those on Ethel Lilian Voynich assumed that Wilfrid "moved to New York" in or about 1914 with his secretary Anne M. Nill, and that his wife joined him only in or about 1920. The truth is, however, quite different. Wilfrid Voynich crossed the Atlantic several times during and after World War I, also after his wife arrived with him in 1922. Miss Nill did not come with him from England but was an American citizen born in Buffalo. She accompanied him on at least four of his voyages in 1921-1924. The Ellis Island records of passangers arriving in the port of New York show, moreover, that Voynich had not been in the USA before 1914 (when he came on The Lusitania which was sunk the following May), that he had not become a US citizen before 1924 (or maybe not at all?), and many other interesting details. Below is the list of those arrivals with links to actual records - I have cut out the relevant strips and pasted them below the form header. There are two pages per alien and one per US citizen.
These are certainly not all of Voynich's visits as in 1921 he said he had last been in the USA in the same year 1921, in 1922 that he had been there "many times" and in "various states", while in 1923 that he had been in 1914 for the first time and "eache year since". I hope including these scans is not illegal... |
